CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF THE OPENING TO TRAFFIC OF THE CENTRAL WALES LINE, AKA THE HEART OF WALES LINE. AND IT’S STEAM HAULAGE!
Arriva Train Wales is proud to sponsor this opportunity to travel over this scenic rural line, not only a return run but steam hauled into the bargain, appropriately by a class of engine so associated with working the line all those years ago.
The day begins with a diesel locomotive hauling the classic mark I carriages, picking up passengers from several stations between Birmingham and Shrewsbury. Upon reversal here ‘Black Five’ no. 45231 ‘The Sherwood Forester’ (courtesy of Locomotive Services Limited) heads the eight carriage special train first south to Craven Arms, before powering onto the single track Central Wales / Heart of Wales Line, which meanders across the heartland of Wales.
‘Clickity-clack’ over the jointed rails; up and down dale the route undulates between the hills, joining together the several towns and isolated communities of the region. Several stops will be made to water the engine and perhaps take photographs.
Mid-afternoon sees an arrival into Carmarthen, allowing a short break for participants whilst 45231 is turned and serviced. The outward journey of 110 miles is then repeated back to Shrewsbury before the diesel locomotive takes over for the set down run onto Birmingham to conclude what promises to be a most memorable day.
This excursion is promoted by Arriva Train Wales with Pathfinder Tours acting as booking agent. https://bookings.torbayexpress.co.uk/bookings/BookingForm_UK.aspx?Action=New&C=20
