Hi all- a very informative & most enjoyable Geology Field Trip was led by John Downes to the West of the County centred at Whitesand’s Bay. Eleven members joined John to go on the Field Trip in initially overcast but brightening conditions. The morning period went along the Coast Path to the West of Whitesand’s Bay with special attention and description given by John to the Porth Lleuog and Porth Melgan Bays where noticeable inclusions can be seen. The gabbro boulders on the headland between the bays of the baked shale’s were of particular interest and discussion with lovely views over the Bays. After a most welcome lunch at the Whitesand’s Café the group went onto the beach area and headed East and stopped to inspect a particularly exposed and pronounced section of shale beds which was included with a prominent dolerite dyke. Re-joining the Coast Path John conducted the group to the area of the Ogof Golchfa cave where to the South cleaved tuff’s are intruded by another dolerite dyke. For further detailed particulars of the geology covered please liaise with John. I attach a few photos for interest.
