Meeting held on 28th July
11 members attended.
For the first time we were able to connect to the NAC wireless broadband and go online.
Several useful web sites were demonstrated.
2 useful weekly free news letters – http://www.win7news.net/Subscribe/ and http://www.wxpnews.com/subscribe.cfm . Decide which Windows operating system you have and log on. Both are free and very informative.
One of the above gave a link to “7 free Windows tune-up tools and tips” – http://www.networkworld.com/news/2011/071111-windows-tools-tips.html?page=1 . This formed the subject for the meeting and we were able to access the site online and link to the 7 suggested sites. I am not going to describe everything; you can follow the links. All the explanations are there.
Although I am always saying that more than one antivirus is a bad thing as they tend to 'fight' one another, I have used 3 free programs with Windows for years and they get on OK. They have kept me protected from all 'nasties' so far.
1. Avast Antivirus – http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download – make sure you opt for the free version.
2. ThreatFire – http://www.threatfire.com/download/ – again make sure you opt for the free version.
3. Windows Defender – http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
The other main free (or almost) programs can be found at the Ashampoo site – https://www.ashampoo.com/uk/gbp . Click on the link to the downloads.
https://www.ashampoo.com/uk/gbp/pin/0349/Security_Software/Ashampoo-Virus-Quickscan , are free.
WinOptimizer is a useful program. You can buy it for ?34.99. OR IF YOU ARE MEAN LIKE ME you can download the free trial version and use it for 40 days. Then stop and wait for Ashampoo to email you. They gradually offer lower prices until it gets down to about ?7.99. That is the price that suits me!
So ? that is all from me, folks. I shall be away for the meetings in September, November and December. I hope another member will take on the running of the Computer Club. I will certainly do all I can to help them. It?s all these blooming holidays!
Hope to see you all sometime. I have enjoyed the past 15 years or so, and hope you have, but think it is time to move on.
